What is local SEO, and why does it matter for a small business?

Most of local SEO doesn't happen on your website.

That surprises people. It's also the most useful thing to know, because it changes where you spend your time.

What does local SEO actually mean?

SEO stands for search engine optimisation. It means making it easier for search engines to understand what you do, so they show you to the right people.

Local SEO is the same idea, tied to a place. It's about turning up when someone searches 'electrician near me', 'physio Paddington' or 'dog groomer Wynnum'.

Those searches get a different kind of result. Alongside the usual list of websites, Google shows a map with a short list of businesses under it - the map pack. Each of those listings comes from a Google Business Profile, not a website.

How does Google decide which local businesses to show?

Google says local results come down to three things.

  • Relevance. How well your Business Profile matches what someone searched for.
  • Distance. How far you are from the person searching, or from the place they typed in.
  • Prominence. How well known you are. Google looks at things like your reviews, and how many other websites link to you or mention you.

And you can't pay your way up. Google says there's no way to pay for a better local ranking. You can buy ads, which are labelled as ads, but the map itself is earned.

Distance is the one you can't change - you can't move your business closer to every customer. That's the uncomfortable bit. Relevance and prominence are where the work is.

What does local SEO involve?

In practice, five things.

  • A complete Google Business Profile. The right main category, your services, accurate hours, photos and a description that says plainly what you do. Google says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local results.
  • Reviews. A steady flow of genuine ones, and a reply to every one. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking.
  • A website that backs it up. Pages that say what you do and where you do it, in the words your customers actually use (not the words on your business card).
  • The same details everywhere. Your business name, address and phone number, matching wherever you appear online.
  • Mentions elsewhere. Listings in the right directories, and mentions on local and industry websites.

None of it is glamorous. All of it counts.

Why does local SEO matter more for a small business?

A national brand can win customers with advertising, a big social following or a name everyone already knows. A small local business usually can't.

For most small businesses, the moment that matters is when someone nearby searches for exactly what they do.

And those searches mean business. Someone typing 'emergency plumber' into their phone isn't browsing - they want someone now, and they'll probably ring one of the first few names they see. If you're not in that list, you don't get the chance to be chosen.

Here's the good news. Local search is one of the few places a small business competes on fair terms. Being close and being relevant count for a lot, and neither costs a cent. The small business in the next suburb can outrank the big one across town.

Does local SEO still matter with AI search?

Yes.

When someone asks Google or an AI assistant to recommend a local business, the answer is built from the same places local SEO works on: your Business Profile, your reviews, your website and what other sites say about you.

Google's own guidance treats showing up in its AI features as the same work as ordinary SEO. There's no secret AI trick, whatever the emails in your inbox promise.

Can you do local SEO yourself?

A lot of it, yes. Claiming and filling in your Google Business Profile is free. Asking happy customers for a review costs nothing but a slightly awkward moment.

It gets harder when you need to know what to fix first, keep it going month after month, and spot what you can't see from the inside - like a competitor using a category you never thought of.

That's the part I do. If you want to see how it works, start with local SEO for Brisbane small businesses.

Your website is where people decide. Local search is where they find you in the first place.

Frequently asked questions

Is local SEO the same as a Google Business Profile?

No. Your Google Business Profile is the biggest single part of local SEO, but local SEO also covers your reviews, your website, your business details across the web and what other sites say about you.

Do I need a website for local SEO?

You can appear in the map results with only a Business Profile. A website helps, because it gives Google more to understand about what you do and where, and it gives customers somewhere to check you out before they call.

How is local SEO different from regular SEO?

It uses many of the same skills, but it's tied to a place. Regular SEO is about ranking a website for a topic, wherever the searcher is. Local SEO is about being found by people nearby, and much of it happens on your Google Business Profile rather than your website.

Does local SEO work for businesses without a shopfront?

Yes. A business that goes to its customers, like a cleaner or a mobile mechanic, can set a service area on its Business Profile instead of showing an address.

Can I pay Google to rank higher on the map?

No. Google says there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. You can pay for ads, which are labelled as ads, but the map results themselves are earned.

Are you happy with how your business shows up (or doesn’t show up) online?
